Paper – A Feminist Vision For The AI EU Act – by Alexandra Wudel

The Power of AI

How AI regulation must be addressed

Old, white, western men still dominate politics and the theory and practice of digital policy and AI. As a result, the needs of women and minorities are permanently ignored. Our policy paper addresses the need for justics in AI regulation.

Putting together a text that talks about my challenges, the work of @femai_centerfeministai and our Feminist Al and digital policy roundtable was kind of tricky. ChatGPT wasn’t of great help! 😃

I wanted it to be inclusive, especially for those in Germany who might not know much about Al and are a bit scared of it. And what about the language: German or English? Thanks to @robineliasalef for helping me figure that out!

And how did I even get this opportunity? Well, it’s all thanks to my amazing network. @dr_burnai and @eva.gengler, you two are awesome for giving me this shot!

I don’t see how we currently address the risk of excluding whole age groups from the future of digital narratives. And I don’t accept that so many people hold fears about technology!

When we speak about AI and the digital age, we focus on white male privileged user groups. This is why I am working on a feminist Al approach with all these lovely people around me. But it’s not about females only!

And to be honest: 40% of the German population being able to vote are of the age of 60+. Isn’t this a political field we should address as well? Why is nobody doing this?

  • It’s getting seriously!

Will the German Federal Foreign Office's future Al
Charter be feminist?

We are happy to have been invited by the Federal Foreign Office Germany to discuss the creation of guiding principles for a future Al Charter!
@femai_centerfeministai

I definitely see a high potential in the work of the Federal Foreign Office that can be enriched by the use of Al. The use of Al to achieve the SDs, for example, represents a great future field (i.e. prevent crop failure).

At the same time. • we need to ban automated weapons systems, » have straight guidelines in terms of the accuracy of visa checks (especially with regard to marignalised groups), and » include diverse stakeholder groups along the entire Al lifecycle and related policy processes.

Along the lines of feminist foreign policy and feminist development policy, it only makes sense that the Al Charter also fits into this intersectional feminist future narrative.

Make it a feminist ambition!

Only in this way do we address both the challenges in the form of discrimination potential, disinformation,
DeepFakes and Hatespeech as well as their potential in advocating for marginalised, under-represented and under-privileged groups.

My take:

This is my Christmas present. I am proud that Europe is playing a pioneering role in the regulation of AI 💘.
Congratulations EU. You have done it!

After the trialogue, I didn't want to change places in this heated discussion between innovation status and human rights protection.

I must say, I have a very personal relationship to this regulation and it marked my path since the first draft was proposed in 21.04.2021.

The AI Act massively influenced my work.

⚛ I wrote my master's thesis on the ethical dimensions of the EU AI Act.
⚛ I published a paper on how the EU AI law could affect the use of facial recognition software in law enforcement.
⚛ We have participated in standardisation conferences.
⚛ With the Feminist AI and Digital Policy Roundtable, we held 4 sessions on the EU AI Act.
⚛ I recorded two podcasts on the impact of the EU AI Act from a feminist perspective.
⚛ At @femai_centerfeministai we created a policy paper to advocate for the rights of marginalised groups.

Behind the scenes 🎥

Last week was a big deal for me.
I dived deep into the world of Al!

It was my first time doing a professional video shoot, and a bunch of awesome people worked really hard behind the scenes. This was so much fun!

Shoutout to the @reeperbahn_festival team for having my back and giving me the confidence to speak in front of a camera.

Huge thanks to Julia, Stella & Cora for the support and the chance to share my thoughts.

AI goes politics

We had a heated discussion at Basecamp!

Representatives from politics, business and civil society were present (the number of different perspectives in the audience was fantastic!).

After input from Ilyas Heckmann and Philipp C. Otte on the current potentials and limitations of AI, I discussed with Marco-Alexander Breit (Head of the Sub-Department AI, Data and Digital Technologies at BMWK) and Flora Geske (Managing Director @summ_leichtesprache) the current FPD self-commitment guideline on the use of AI, the use of tools like Summ AI in the public sector and what is required to foster this rapid transformation.

I opened the panel discussion with a story:
With F 13, about the text assistant from @aleph.alpha.official, which is the first chatbot to be used in the State Ministry Baden Württemberg. A brillant example to demonstrate the current environment: AI is supposed to move us forward confidently, and yet is not spared the potential for discrimination by AI.

The fact that the first question from the audience came from Alpen Alpha showed me that we are discussing the ravages of time.

The colourful composition of the panellists, which was also reflected in the audience, makes me optimistic - I think the German digitalisation narrative is being rewritten. Or is it?

AI without ethics (for me as a feminist!) is no longer possible - and not only because the EU AI Act is to be passed this year.

This is a personal one ☝️

Spending time with my grandparents this weekend, demonstrated again why we need to address the diversity in our society when developing and deploying* technology.

And who is explaining how to use technology to elders? Dear @edeka, your website is WAAAY to complicated for 85+! Props to Hans, who’s 94 and desperate to order online!!

* Software deployment is all of the activities that make a software system available for use. The general deployment process consists of several interrelated activities with possible transitions between them. These activities can occur on the producer side or on the consumer side or both.

Why is nobody doing this? #digitalpolicy #ageism #grandparentingrocks #AI #countryside * Software deployment is all of the activities that make a software system available for use. The general deployment process consists of several interrelated activities with possible transitions between them. These activities can occur on the producer side or on the consumer side or both.

It’s getting seriously!

Will the German Federal Foreign Office's future Al
Charter be feminist?

We are happy to have been invited by the Federal Foreign Office Germany to discuss the creation of guiding principles for a future Al Charter!
@femai_centerfeministai

My take:
